Lucy Rose of Sharon is an upright flowering shrub known for its large, double red-pink flowers with a full, peony-like appearance. The showy blooms begin in midsummer and continue into fall, adding dependable color when many other shrubs have finished flowering. Lucy has a naturally vase-shaped growth habit and works well as a specimen plant, flowering hedge, privacy screen, or small ornamental tree. It also attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees while handling Southern heat and humidity well. Lucy is a sterile cultivar, so it doesn’t produce the unwanted seedlings commonly associated with some Rose of Sharon varieties.

Lucy Rose of Sharon blooms on new growth, so it can be pruned in late winter or early spring before new leaves appear. Plant it in full sun for the heaviest flowering, although it can tolerate some part sun. Once established, it handles heat, humidity, clay soil, and short periods of drought. Lucy is a sterile cultivar and doesn’t produce seeds, making it easier to manage in the landscape than many traditional Rose of Sharon varieties.
