Jane Magnolia is a beautiful deciduous flowering shrub or small tree known for its large, tulip-shaped blooms. The flowers are reddish-purple to deep pink on the outside with soft white interiors and appear on bare branches before the leaves emerge in spring. Jane blooms later than many other magnolias, which helps protect its flowers from late frost damage. Its compact, rounded growth habit makes it an excellent choice for specimen plantings, foundation beds, mixed borders, and smaller landscapes. Occasional flowers may also appear again during summer.

Notes
Jane Magnolia flowers on older growth, so pruning should be done shortly after flowering to avoid removing the following year’s flower buds. Plant it in rich, moist, well-drained soil and provide regular watering while it becomes established. Full sun usually produces the heaviest flowering, although some afternoon shade can be helpful in hot Southern climates. Avoid unnecessary pruning because magnolias generally look best when allowed to maintain their natural shape. Jane Magnolia typically blooms from mid-April into early May and is less likely than earlier-blooming magnolias to suffer frost-damaged flowers.
