Chinese Snowball Bush

Chinese Snowball Bush is a large, showy viburnum prized for its enormous, rounded flower clusters that resemble white snowballs resting across the branches. The blooms usually emerge lime green before maturing to creamy white, creating an impressive spring display against the deep green foliage.

Unlike many other viburnums, the large flower clusters are made mostly of sterile flowers and generally do not produce berries. The dramatic blooms are the main attraction and can also be cut for fresh spring arrangements.

This fast-growing shrub develops a broad, rounded shape and works beautifully as a specimen plant, flowering hedge, privacy screen, background shrub, or small ornamental tree in larger Southern landscapes. Give it plenty of room to reach its mature height and width so it can maintain its natural form without frequent trimming.

Plant Chinese Snowball Bush in full sun to part shade with moist, well-drained soil. Plants receiving plenty of sunlight generally produce the strongest flower display, although some afternoon shade can be helpful during especially hot Georgia summers.

Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season while the root system becomes established. A two- to three-inch layer of mulch can help conserve soil moisture, reduce weeds, and keep the roots cooler. Keep the mulch several inches away from the main stems.

Chinese Snowball Bush develops many of its flower buds on older growth. If pruning is needed, wait until shortly after the spring flowers fade. Remove dead, damaged, weak, or crossing branches first, then lightly shape the remaining growth. Pruning in late summer, fall, or winter may remove buds and reduce the following spring’s flowers.
