Red Twig Dogwood

Red Twig Dogwood is a deciduous flowering shrub best known for its brilliant red stems, which provide bold landscape color after the leaves drop in fall. Clusters of small white flowers appear in late spring or early summer, followed by pale berries that attract birds and other wildlife.

Its green summer foliage may develop red or purple tones in fall before revealing the colorful winter branches. The brightest stem color usually appears on younger growth, which makes renewal pruning especially helpful for maintaining the shrub’s winter display.

Red Twig Dogwood works well in rain gardens, naturalized areas, moist borders, wildlife gardens, mass plantings, erosion-prone slopes, and mixed shrub beds. It can also be planted where its red winter stems will stand out against evergreen shrubs, light-colored walls, snow, or dormant ornamental grasses.

Plant Red Twig Dogwood in full sun to part shade. More sunlight generally produces stronger stem color, but the shrub can still perform well with some shade. It prefers consistently moist soil and can tolerate wetter conditions better than many common landscape shrubs. Water newly planted shrubs regularly while their root systems become established, especially during hot or dry weather.

To encourage fresh, brightly colored stems, remove some of the oldest branches in late winter or early spring. Cut those older stems close to the ground while leaving healthy younger growth in place. This renewal-pruning method stimulates vigorous new branches without removing the entire shrub at once.

The University of Minnesota Extension’s Redosier Dogwood guide explains that the brightest bark develops on stems less than three years old and recommends regular renewal pruning to maintain strong winter color.

With moist soil, enough growing space, and occasional removal of older stems, Red Twig Dogwood can provide flowers, berries, fall foliage, wildlife value, and striking winter interest throughout the year.
