Phantom Hydrangea

Phantom Hydrangea is a large panicle hydrangea known for its enormous, cone-shaped flower clusters and strong, upright growth. The blooms open creamy white in summer and may gradually develop soft pink tones as cooler fall weather arrives. Its sturdy stems help support the oversized flowers and keep the shrub looking full and attractive throughout the blooming season. The long-lasting blooms also make beautiful fresh-cut or dried arrangements. Phantom Hydrangea works well as a specimen shrub, flowering hedge, privacy screen, background plant, or bold addition to a large mixed border. Give it plenty of room to reach its mature size and display its natural shape.

Plant Phantom Hydrangea in full sun to part sun and choose soil that stays evenly moist without remaining soggy. In Georgia, regular deep watering is especially important during the first growing season and during extended periods of summer heat. Adding two to three inches of mulch around the root zone can help conserve moisture and reduce temperature swings.

Because Phantom Hydrangea blooms on new wood, prune it in late winter or early spring before fresh growth begins. For the best display, allow enough space around Phantom Hydrangea for air circulation and its naturally broad shape. Avoid planting it too close to walkways, smaller shrubs, or building foundations. Once established, it is fairly dependable, but consistent moisture during hot, dry weather will help prevent wilting and keep the flower clusters looking their best through late summer and early fall.
