You can plant a healthy shrub, prepare the soil, water it regularly, and still watch it struggle. When that happens, it is easy to blame the shrub, the weather, or Georgia’s red clay.
But sometimes the real problem is the mature tree growing nearby.
Large trees affect much more than the amount of shade in a landscape. Their roots compete with shrubs for water, nutrients, oxygen, and growing space. Their canopies can also redirect rainfall, change sunlight levels, and create surprisingly dry soil underneath.

Understanding this hidden competition can help homeowners choose better planting locations and avoid years of frustration.
Tree Roots Extend Far Beyond the Trunk
Most homeowners know that trees have large root systems, but many underestimate how far those roots spread.
Tree roots commonly extend beyond the outer edge of the branches. They do not remain in a small circle around the trunk, and many of the roots that absorb water and nutrients grow relatively close to the soil surface.
That puts them in direct competition with shrub roots.
When digging near a mature tree, you may find:
- A planting hole filled with small feeder roots
- Thick roots running close to the surface
- Hard, compacted soil between the roots
- Very little open soil for a new shrub to establish

Second, the tree’s extensive root system quickly absorbs much of the water that does reach the ground.
This can create what gardeners sometimes describe as dry shade: an area that receives limited sunlight but is also much drier than a typical shady location.
A shrub planted there may wilt even though it recently rained.
Trees and Shrubs Compete for Water
A mature tree already has an established root system and a major advantage over a newly planted shrub.
During hot or dry weather, the tree can pull moisture from a wide area. The shrub, meanwhile, may have only a small root system extending slightly beyond its original nursery container.
Signs that a shrub may be losing the competition for water include:

Pine needles can be useful as mulch, but they should not be allowed to pile deeply against the base of a shrub.
Keep the crown and main stems visible, and remove excessive buildup when necessary.
Do Not Add Deep Soil Over Tree Roots
When homeowners encounter exposed roots or poor soil beneath a tree, they sometimes try to solve the problem by adding a thick layer of topsoil.
This can harm the tree.
Tree roots need oxygen, and burying them beneath several inches of new soil can reduce airflow and alter drainage. Piling soil or mulch against the tree trunk can also encourage decay.

When digging, move the planting location if you encounter major roots. Do not force a large planting hole into a root-filled area simply because it looks like the perfect location above ground.
Sometimes moving the shrub a few feet farther away makes a significant difference.
Shrubs That May Handle Filtered Shade
Some shrubs are better suited to filtered light and partial shade than others. Possible choices for Georgia landscapes include:
- Oakleaf hydrangea
- Virginia sweetspire
- Aucuba
- Camellia
- Mahonia
- Fothergilla
- Certain azaleas
- Summersweet
However, shade tolerance does not automatically mean root-competition tolerance.
Even a shade-loving shrub can struggle if the soil is extremely dry or filled with tree roots. Plant selection helps, but it cannot completely overcome a poor planting site.
Shrubs That May Struggle Near Mature Trees
Shrubs that require abundant sunlight, consistent moisture, or rich open soil may perform poorly beneath dense tree canopies.
These can include:
- Sun-loving panicle hydrangeas
- Butterfly bushes
- Many roses

- Heavy-blooming full-sun shrubs

The plant may survive, but it may grow slowly, bloom poorly, or require constant attention.
A plant that merely survives is not necessarily planted in the right location.
Tips for Planting Shrubs Near Trees
When planting near mature trees is unavoidable, these steps can improve the shrub’s chances:
Choose a Smaller Shrub
A smaller nursery plant requires a smaller planting hole and may establish more easily between existing tree roots.
Plant Farther From the Trunk
Conditions often improve as you move away from the trunk and the densest concentration of major roots.
Check Moisture Before Watering
Do not assume rainfall reached the shrub’s roots. Check the soil several inches deep.
Water Slowly and Deeply
Apply water directly over the shrub’s root zone and allow it to soak in gradually. Avoid frequent shallow sprinkling.
Use Mulch Carefully
Apply approximately two to three inches of mulch around the shrub, but keep it away from the shrub’s stems and the tree trunk.
Select Plants for the Actual Conditions
Choose plants based on the site’s true sunlight, moisture, and available root space—not simply whether the label says “part shade.”
Expect Slower Growth
A shrub growing near a mature tree may establish and grow more slowly than the same shrub planted in an open bed.
When Moving the Shrub Is the Best Choice
