Choosing the Right Plant
Start with your space. We’ll help with the plants.
Can you help me choose a plant for my yard?
Yes. Helping customers choose plants that fit their yards is an important part of what we do.
We consider sunlight, mature size, soil moisture, drainage, bloom color, maintenance needs, space, and nearby trees or structures.
Can the app help me choose plants?
Yes. Our Garden Help app includes plant-search and garden-help tools that can help you narrow down choices.
What does full sun mean?
Full sun generally means at least six hours of direct sunlight each day.
Six hours of morning sun is very different from six hours of intense Georgia afternoon sun. Pay attention to both the amount and time of day.
How do I know whether my yard has good drainage?
Watch the planting area after a heavy rain.
If water stands for several hours or the soil stays soggy for days, drainage may be poor.
How close can I plant a shrub to my house?
The proper distance depends on the shrub’s mature width, not its size when you buy it.
Leave room for growth, airflow, maintenance, windows, walkways, and the foundation.
Hydrangea Questions
Better choices, better pruning, and better blooms.
Which hydrangeas grow well in Georgia?
Panicle, smooth, oakleaf, and bigleaf hydrangeas can all perform well in Georgia. The best choice depends on sunlight, space, drainage, and your goals.
Learn more in our Complete Guide to Growing Hydrangeas in Georgia.
Why is my hydrangea not blooming?
Common causes include pruning at the wrong time, late frost, too much shade, excess fertilizer, wildlife damage, or winter injury.
Read Why Is My Hydrangea Not Blooming? for the full troubleshooting guide.
When should I prune my hydrangea?
Pruning time depends on the hydrangea type.
Panicle and smooth hydrangeas bloom on brand new stems and can usually be pruned in late winter or early spring.
Many bigleaf and oakleaf hydrangeas bloom on old wood, which means growth that has been on the plant since the last growing season.
Can I change the color of my hydrangea blooms?
Some bigleaf hydrangeas can shift between blue, purple, and pink depending partly on soil chemistry and aluminum availability.
Panicle and smooth hydrangeas do not change flower color with soil pH. White bigleaf flowers generally stay white.

Planting & Care
Give your new plants a good start at home.
When is the best time to plant shrubs in Georgia?
Fall is often an excellent time because the soil stays warm while the air cools. Early spring is another good planting period.
Summer planting is possible, but it requires closer attention to watering and heat stress.
How often should I water a newly planted shrub?
There is no single watering schedule that works for every yard.
Check the soil and water deeply enough to moisten the original root ball and surrounding soil.
Read How to Keep Newly Planted Shrubs Alive in Summer for more practical watering advice.
Should I fertilize a new plant?
Proper planting and watering are usually more important than immediately applying fertilizer. Too much fertilizer can stress new roots.
Should I add gravel to the planting hole?
No. Adding gravel to the bottom of a planting hole does not reliably improve drainage.
How deep should I plant a shrub?
The top of the root ball should generally sit level with, or slightly above, the surrounding soil.
Should I mulch around new plants?
Yes. Apply about two to three inches of mulch over the root area and keep it several inches away from the stems or trunk.
Plant Problems
Look at the whole plant—and check the soil first.
Why is my new plant wilting?
Wilting can be caused by heat stress, dry soil, waterlogged soil, transplant stress, intense afternoon sun, or poor drainage.
Check the soil before adding more water.
Why are the leaves turning yellow?
Yellow leaves can result from watering issues, poor drainage, root stress, nutrient problems, disease, or natural aging.
Can you identify a plant problem from a picture?
Pictures can help, but they do not always provide enough information for a definite diagnosis. Include the whole plant, close-ups, the soil, sunlight, and your watering routine.
Is a wilted plant always dying?
No. Some plants wilt temporarily during intense afternoon heat and recover when temperatures cool.
Check again early in the morning. Wilting that continues, especially with very wet or very dry soil, needs a closer look.
